This workshop discusses disinfection in the water and wastewater industry.

It covers the history of ancient water treatment methods, including a timeline for the introduction of different types of chlorine and alternative disinfection technologies.

Chlorination is outlined in-depth, including its function and the necessary safety procedures and equipment needed during use. Equipment required for the use of gaseous chlorine, sodium hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite are described. Laboratory test procedures are also reviewed, highlighting common mistakes when performing analysis.

The last section of the presentation examines various alternative disinfection methods including onsite sodium hypochlorite generation, chloramination, ozone, ultraviolet light, chlorine dioxide, MIOX, boiling, iodine, membrane filtration and ultrasonic disinfection.

This presentation is valuable for new and experienced operators in the water and wastewater industry. The material covers all the basics of disinfection including a look at the new and emerging alternative disinfection processes.
