This workshop will cover advanced wastewater treatment processes, first providing an overview of preliminary, primary and secondary treatment and then focusing on the question – why is tertiary treatment necessary?

Part one will include an overview of tertiary treatment processes, including granular and membrane filtration, disinfection, nutrient removal and various chemical treatment methods.
•Granular Filtration and Membrane Filtration
•UV Disinfection, Ozonation and Chlorination/Dechlorination
•Biological Nutrient Removal and Chemical Processes
•Coagulation, Flocculation- sedimentation and Advanced Oxidation Processes

Part two will review technologies used for the elimination of micro contaminants (advanced treatment technologies). This will include a discussion on the fate of CEC’s (contaminants of emerging concern) and currently applied and tested technologies used to tackle the problem. Through the lens of use potentials and limitations, other technologies including membranes, absorption, ozonation and oxidation processes will be discussed.

In addition to case studies, the ACWA (Advancing Canadian Waster Assets) partnership between the City of Calgary and the University of Calgary will also be touched on.
