Description
Variable frequency drives are known for energy savings in pumping applications; however, these savings can be eroded if the variable frequency drive creates pumping issues or does not have a fair return on the initial installation cost. This workshop presentation will provide information that helps to ensure variable frequency drive installations are properly designed and existing issues are resolved.
Variable frequency drives have been used for over 38 years and still, the same problems occur repeatedly. They can be viewed as a commodity product and are installed without proper application verification. Two identical pump stations at different locations will have different operation conditions, requiring different options and features to be added to achieve the highest system reliability.
The proper application and installation of the variable frequency drive must consider several factors including:
- Site conditions
- Utility power source
- Physical location of the variable frequency drive
- Component layout
- Motor details
Attendees will leave with practical tools to both prevent and resolve variable frequency drive issues. A reference manual will be provided to participants, offering detailed design guidelines, real-world examples, and component selection insights.
