Description
In this workshop, WSP will share its diverse experience with attendees, providing insights into the design, operational procedures, and best practices for sewage lagoon management in Alberta.
The 2018 Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations (WSER) Annual Report details that Alberta has 156 lagoon systems, accounting for approximately 77% of the 202 total wastewater treatment facilities in the province.
These lagoon systems are widely used across Alberta due to their cost-effectiveness and proven reliability in treating municipal wastewater. Effective lagoon management involves several critical aspects, including regulatory compliance, routine monitoring and reporting, systematic operations and maintenance, and adapting procedures to meet evolving treatment requirements.
WSP has extensive experience in lagoon management, offering expertise in lagoon design, liner engineering, and the development of operational procedures tailored to meet specific facility needs. A key example of this expertise is the work conducted at the Clover Bar Lagoon facility. In 2025, WSP developed detailed operational procedures for this site, emphasizing safe lagoon operations and strategies to reduce solids loading directed to the Ostara nutrient recovery system. These procedures help optimize system efficiency and ensure compliance with environmental standards. In 2020, the conceptual design of Lagoon Cells 1 through 4 for the Clover Bar Biosolids Facilities were developed. This work covers all aspects of lagoon engineering, from structural design to sludge handling and system upgrades, ensuring long-term operational sustainability.
