2025 Water Week Workshop #5 - Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Wastewater Treatment Plants: Identifying Key Sources and Steps to Reduce Emissions

CEUs

0.3 CEUs

Description

This workshop will examine the significant issue of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater treatment plants, with a focus on the primary contributors: methane (CH₄), nitrous oxide (N₂O), and carbon dioxide (CO₂).

Participants will gain an understanding of how these emissions arise from key treatment stages, including anaerobic digestion, sludge handling, and the activated sludge process, which is both energy-intensive and a major source of N₂O during aeration and nitrogen removal.

Emphasis will be placed on identifying high-emission areas, measuring and estimating emissions, and implementing feasible, cost-effective strategies to reduce emissions at the operational level.

The workshop also highlights real-world examples of plants moving toward net-zero emissions and becoming energy-positive, demonstrating how climate-smart operations can go together with performance and cost savings. After all, wastewater is not waste – it’s a valuable resource that, when properly managed, can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support a more sustainable, circular water system.
