How to Become a Certified Operator

Wondering what you need to get started?

Along with your desire to be part of a sustainable and rewarding career that delivers essential services through the provision of safe drinking water and stewardship for the environment, you must possess the following:

  1.  High School Diploma or GED
  2.  Mandatory Entry Level Training – AWWOA provides two options (only 1 is required):
  3. One year of work experience in a Level I or higher Provincially recognized facility
  4. Pass the Provincial Certification Exam

Once you have the four items above, you can apply for your Provincial certification with Alberta Environment.

If you are not yet able to meet the requirements for Level I certification, but would like to challenge the Level I exam, you will need to apply directly to Alberta Environment through the portal. The same process for approvals and scheduling applies. Successfully challenging the exam does not constitute certification. Once ALL eligibility requirements have been met, the operator can then apply for certification online through the AEPA Water and Wastewater Operator Certification Portal (Compliance365).

NOTE: You can still apply for positions requiring certification as employers may hire an operator in the process of acquiring the three items above.

Operating In Training (OIT)

Alberta specific OIT certification is now available. If you meet the below criteria and wish to obtain a OIT certificate, please email waterandwastewateroperatorcert@gov.ab.ca to request an application form. OIT is not mandatory and is not eligible for reciprocity.

  • Completion of Approved Mandatory Training Course for Level I (minimum 1.2 CEU’s)
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Pass Level I certification exam
